ABSTRACT

Sustainability: what is it? How is it achieved? Whose sustainability is it? Someone looking for sustainability will find in nearly every situation these questions have a unique answer. This is inevitable because ecological and social systems are dynamic. People working in international development must recognize this. Some suggestions on how they might achieve more sustainable systems is the first objective of this chapter. A second objective is to describe the characteristics of a sustainable land-use management system. A third is to indicate what development agencies can do to fund more successful projects of this kind.
