Philosophical Considerations

As Banes (1990) points out, the interactive approach to the education of pupils with severe/profound learning difficulties reflects the principles of the growing self advocacy movement and its promotion of an increase in awareness of their basic human rights. Self advocacy includes activities such as legal actions and activities to secure rights. At the heart of the movement is the individual’s human right to express needs and make decisions in everyday activities where opportunities for informed choice making, self direction and group participation are also a basic right.
