Early Development Within Level 1 of the National Curriculum
Facilitating perceptual development is necessary forthe development of communication but it is not enough withoutthe development of the functional use of communication in the social context. Such development is summarised and outlined in its early stages by Goldbart (1988a) as Figure 1 overleaf illustrates. Some functions of communication are summarised by Kiernan and Reid (1987), and for those learners who have not yet achieved intentional communication. The Affective Communication Assessment (Coupe. J., Barton, L., Barber, M., Collins., Levy, D. and Murphy, D. 1985) provides ways to identify potentially communicative behaviours and the settings in which they are likely to occur.
