Implications for Approaches to Programmes of Study It is clear that the skills involved in the process of communication at any level cannot be taught or extended in isolation from a context which has meaning forthe learner. This in turn is fundamental to the development of the interrelated elements of understanding/listening and expression. The quality of the interactions s/he is involved in is a crucial and integral part of this process. For these reasons the approaches and activities used in teaching cannot be separated from the targeted skills and all of these aspects should facilitate child initiation and response in two way interaction. Hence this document does not separate attainment targets from programmes of study but combines the two in a process which is child centred.
