ABSTRACT
Literacy today cannot be restricted to the printed word. The culture of the western world surrounds children with a myriad of signs and symbols from the moment they are born. Much everyday communication is in graphic form, or may be in a combination of written text, symbol and picture. The images provided by the television screen, street sign advertising, newspapers, junk mail and books are an integral part of contemporary life.
