ABSTRACT

The annual review statement is a review of the child's progress. Schools should ensure that feedback on the child's educational and non-educational progress is provided throughout the school year, and should not rely solely on the annual review to undertake this. As with any child in mainstream school, there should be an opportunity for the parents to attend routine parent consultations with staff teaching their child. The annual review under the Code of Practice, however, makes it more important than ever that parents have an opportunity to review how their child is progressing in school before the annual review process takes place. Preparation for the annual review begins when local education authority (LEA) notifies the school that the review is required. The local education authority may have an overall policy on the minimum frequency with which a psychologist should see a child who is subject to a Statement, and head teachers and SENCOs should ensure they are aware that policy.
