Issues in Teacher Training

The recent presentation of the report of the Special Educational Needs Training Consortium (SENTC, 1996) to the Secretary of State represents a culmination of some six years of lobbying by those concerned at the diminution of training opportunities for teachers of pupils with special educational needs (SEN). The report, funded by the DfEE, puts forward a number of key recommendations aimed at ensuring a good supply of appropriately trained teachers, including the establishment of a body to monitor the supply and quality of training. It remains to be seen however how the Secretary of State will respond to these recommendations, although as we can see if we trace the steps leading to this report there has already been official recognition of many of the concerns.
