ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to give a general introduction to Down’s syndrome and its effects in young children. Consideration is given to a range of factors that are likely to have a bearing on the provision of an appropriate educational regime. Attention is drawn to some of the most recent research on the development of language and memory skills, on the teaching of reading and on the benefits of inclusive school placement. Examples are offered from the author’s recent experience and some conclusions reached about the best way forward for this particular group of children. Further information on topics covered in this chapter can be found in Children with Down’s Syndrome (Lorenz 1998).
