ABSTRACT

The first and third extracts in which the good and bad angels appear are from the beginning and end of the play; the second extract occurs in Scene v when the pact Faustus makes with Lucifer is about to be sealed. The an gels first enter during Faustus’ opening speech when he expresses his dis satisfaction with the limits of the learning he has so far accomplished and contemplates the delights which await him if he turns to magic. Moments later in the scene when he informs his friends Valdes and Cornelius that he has made up his mind to follow that course of action, he tells them, ‘Know

that your words have won me at last.' (my italics). The use of the phrase at last suggests that Faustus has been struggling with his conscience, although this is not a strong feature of his initial speech.
