Developing the relationship

Initially when any two professionals begin working with the same children there is the potential for each to ‘deal with [their] own “bit” of the client’. This could mean that ‘without co-ordination, gaps and/or overlap in services are likely to occur’, and each can blame the other for any difficulties which may arise (Roberts 1994). Such situations could arise for example, as discussed in Chapter 4, when children who have been the sole responsibility of one agency (speech and language therapy) first attend school, and thus become the school’s responsibility, under the jurisdiction of the LEA (Dick 1994).
