ABSTRACT

Vicki and Hakim attend a school for children and young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). Vicki is a fragile six year old with little independent movement. She was born prematurely, spent months in hospital and underwent countless operations. She appears to have suffered massive neurological damage. Her level of awareness is difficult to determine. Hakim, who has very different needs, is in the same class. He is fifteen years old. His profound learning difficulties are compounded by his sensory and physical impairments. He likes familiar routines with familiar people. Usually he is alert and responsive with a ready smile but he protests at changes by increased fitting and signs of distress.
