Introduction Aswebecomeawareofthepossibilitiesofnewtechnology,morecomputersarebeing boughtbyschoolsandservicesforusebypeoplewithprofounddisabilities.Advances arecomingfromthedisseminationofgoodpractice,inventiveuseofnewequipment, andinformedsoftwaredevelopment,ratherthanfromresearchfindings.Information andinnovations,untilrecently,havebeensharedamongstnetworksofenthusiastsin thefield.Thepublishedmaterialthatisnowbecomingavailableismostlyconcerned withthecontributionthattechnologycanmaketoeducationalprogrammes,andthe waysinwhichitcanbeusedtoenhanceanddevelopcommunication;see,forexample, LearningThroughInteractionbyBozicandMurdoch(1995).Inthischapterthe potentialforusingtechnologyinawidercontextwithadultsaswellaschildrenwillbe explored.
