There is a well-researched body of evidence which shows that teachers make a difference in the behaviour of pupils. (For examples see DES 1989, Mortimore et al. 1988, Brown and McIntyre 1993, Farrell 1995, Smith and Laslett 1993, Rutter et al. 1979.) Beside the factors which the other sections of this book touch upon, there are five aspects of being a teacher which aid the teacher in making this difference. They are:
• knowledge and implementation of policies; • expectations; • developing evidence-based practice; • being a team player; • knowing and managing yourself.
