The history of books and bookmaking reflects social and political history: the publication of the first Bible, and the burning of books at various times were significant political acts. Almost any local museum will have examples of ancient books, illuminated manuscripts being part not only of Western European traditions but also of the Middle and Far East. Calligraphy as an artform is a subject we do not cover in this book, but teachers have ready access to information from any local stationery store, where calligraphy pens come complete with instructions on how to make beautiful letters with exotic inks.
