Sculpture and Box Modelling

Children can learn about three-dimensional construction and building, sculpture and modelling through art, craft, design technology, science or mathematics. This chapter can be used in conjunction with those on modelling, collage and clay, since many of the principles outlined apply equally across relief and 3D work. Objectives of teaching 3D construction and modelling were usefully outlined by the Arts in School Project Team (1990): • to increase awareness of tactile sensations; • to develop awareness of texture, shape, scale and size; • to develop manipulative skills; • to develop a sense of spatial awareness; • to work cooperatively; • to encourage language development; • to encourage an element of problem-solving; • to encourage children to express emotions in a creative sense; • to enrich visual and tactile awareness.
