ABSTRACT

In this chapter games and activities are catalogued alphabetically. Each entry includes the basic game, the materials needed and a description of what to do, followed by ways in which it could be extended or varied. You might find it simpler to play the initial game first, then once you are confident with the way that it goes, you can begin to branch out and extend it. All games have great potential to make people feel good and equal potential to destroy morale. For instance, the game 'You're positive' (p. Ill), can greatly enhance the self-esteem of the person who is asked to leave the room if the comments are truly positive. On the other hand, the class could use a game like this one to 'wind up' the teacher by only saying negative things. You will have to develop an atmosphere of trust in the group by using 'safe' games such as 'Keeper of the keys', then move on to more 'risky' ones. You will quickly acquire a sense of when a game is going well, or when it is 'unsafe'. If you think the group is not yet ready for any activity, drop it and do something that you know will go well.
