ABSTRACT
… picture storybooks, both those that are written for children and those that they create for themselves, provide the best material for learning to read and write, once they have discovered the pleasure of sharing a story read aloud and acquired sufficient confidence to begin to join in the actual reading. There are now sufficient picture storybooks of varying levels of difficulty to enable a whole programme to be based on books that children choose because they want to read them for themselves.
