ABSTRACT

In this chapter I have attempted to deconstruct the Core Strands (formerly called the Attainment Target) in the new National Curriculum for physical education by reporting on two pieces of research. Although both projects are based in secondary schools, the issues are relevant to primary schools and it is anticipated that these will make useful reading for primary teachers. I have included a practical activity based on the exemplar units of work that accompany the revised National Curriculum (2000) as non-statutory support. The practical activity emphasises the opportunities for children to be engaged in the activities of the core strands and focuses on teaching methodology to allow the core strands to be taught. I have also linked it with qualities that constitute the behaviours that a good learner in physical education should exhibit.
