ABSTRACT

This chapter on research in design and technology education in the primary years focuses on teaching method. Design and technology as part of primary education has received little attention from the research community. There has, however, been interest from a small proportion of those engaged in teaching or those training teachers and working in LEAs. Presently in the UK there is a lack of clarity about teaching methods and, in particular, how these might apply to different subjects, and in this case to design and technology. My personal interest in the teaching of the subject coincides with the gradual re-emergence of the word ‘pedagogy’; the art and science of teaching. There have been signs of growing interest in teaching method as a subject to be studied and developed. This chapter shows that there is value in research and through it clarity about what we mean by teaching method. A teaching methods checklist is provided as the link resource.
