ABSTRACT
In the present chapter, I will first introduce the contemporary debate on the mechanisms by which children acquire language. I will then give a detailed analysis of an excerpt from a conversation to illustrate patterns of interaction in the home. Analysis of a second excerpt, this time from an early years setting, shows how children are expected to adapt to different demands on their use of language and what opportunities may be beneficial in helping them to do so.
