ABSTRACT
This section suggests activities for looking more closely at words, their forms and meanings and how they are used. The intention is to put language under a microscope, so that children can see how flexible and variable it can be, and can play around with words. The Kingman Report (DES 1988) argued that ‘In what might be called the carpentry of life, language should be the sharpest instrument’ (p. 7).
