SEN and school-based research: why this book now?

In this chapter we examine four key areas which help to explain why a new book about the use of school-based research as an approach to understanding special educational needs (SEN) may be useful to teachers. These four areas (Figure 1.1) concern:

• developments in the policy and practice of teaching pupils with SEN; • advances in the understanding of learning and behaviour difficulties; • contemporary issues in education theory and practice — the bigger picture; • teachers as researchers.
