3: The relationship between design and technology and the arts
The term 'creative arts' is often used to describe subjects such as drama, music and art and design. It implies that some subjects are more creative than others and promotes a misconception about the nature of creativity. We have already argued that design and technology should be regarded as a creative subject (Chapter 1.2). In this chapter we intend to develop this discussion further. We shall look at the relationship between design and technology and the arts and show how an interactionist approach discussed in the previous chapter can benefit children's learning and help break down stereotypical views about whether particular areas of learning are creative or not.
