Introduction

This is a book about primary design and technology, written for those concerned with the education of children aged 4-11: teachers, subject leaders, trainees, trainers, senior managers, advisors and governors. We will consider in some detail the current National Curriculum for England and Wales (DfEE/QCA 1999c), the National Scheme of Work for Design and Technology (QCNDfEE 1998) and design and technology's relationship with the whole curriculum. But we do not begin in the primary classroom; we want firstly to address some much wider issues and raise some fundamental questions about the future. Rest assured, we will spend much of this book examining possible and practical approaches to teaching design and technology. We will illustrate these through reference to case studies set in primary schools.
