ABSTRACT

Previous chapters have illustrated some of the differences in terms of developmental level, and access to social and learning experiences, that may exist within any one group of children starting school for the first time. Their parents too, will be a heterogeneous group and will have a range of expectations and experiences. They will also have different demands on them which may include other children in the family, work pressures, social and financial considerations or domestic difficulties. Their needs, however, like the needs of children, will have many similarities.

This chapter looks at what parents might need in order to maximise their willingness and ability to be ‘partners’ with teachers in promoting both learning and positive behaviour.

Parents in this context means not only natural parents but anyone who has parental responsibility in caring for the child. This may include foster carers or members of the extended family.
