ABSTRACT

In this chapter Liz Laycock discusses how slavery is written about in children’s books. She begins with Uncle Tom’s Cabin and identifies how this is a book of its time. She then introduces the reader to a range of picture books and novels, exploring how the representation of slavery changes over time. The second part of the chapter describes how working with such books helps students to investigate, through drama, discussion and research, issues such as human rights, oppression and globalisation. In these ways, the students learn about the history of slavery and how it is portrayed in children’s books.
