ABSTRACT

The next of the key structures which enable staff to construct a whole curriculum for pupils who experience PMLD is target setting. Special schools have in the past been accustomed to setting targets for individual pupils. However, target setting has gone further and, as a school improvement strategy, is now statutory as outlined in DfEE Circular 11/98 (1998c) and the revised version of Supporting the Target Setting Process (DfEE/QCA March 2001). Target setting is about having challenging yet realistic improvement goals for individual pupils, individual staff members and for the whole school.
