Political struggles for the rights of disabled people have an auspicious history in Canada as they do elsewhere. These struggles form part of the earliest political history of the country and set the stage for the social and legal construction of inequality that still acts as a barrier to full citizenship. Fortunately the nature of those political struggles is very distinct from the political struggles framed by the disability rights movement that has developed in the past 25 years.
