ABSTRACT

Have you ever wondered, walking around a zoo perhaps, why some creatures are stripy and others are spotty? If there were some sort of division in nature and we only had spotty or stripy beasts then maybe I would feel happier. Yet this is far from the case, since you can find animals with both stripes and spots and animals with neither. These markings also contain all manner of colours mixed into the overall pattern on the skin. I have only to look at my wife’s beautifully freckled face to see a pattern that exists in such a random order that I could not hope to write down its mathematical formula. Or could I?
