ABSTRACT

The next step after acquiring a sight vocabulary of words or pictures is to begin to put them together to communicate. Information Technology has made symbols easier to handle for both teachers and carers and learners. This chapter looks specifically at how symbols are used to introduce reading and writing skills. The examples show how symbols can support text for students learning to read, and how they can provide a means of writing for users who are not able to use traditional orthography.
