ABSTRACT

Many children find it difficult to remember multiplication tables. Children with mathematical learning difficulties may find it almost impossible to remember a large number of facts and to readily recall them to help solve a problem. Constant repetition helps, but children need to accept that they may not always be able to recall at will. They must be encouraged to think through the meaning of their work and be willing to work out answers. This may seem an obvious comment to make, but there is still an overemphasis, in some quarters, on the need to learn multiplication by heart. It is important that children have the practical experience necessary to really understand the concept. Such experience also helps children to build up mental images to which they can refer when needed.
