Ask the children to complete the addition square (Photocopiable Sheet D). Ask them to look at the patterns. What do they notice? There are many opportunities for discussion about sequences and patterns, about the effects of adding one more, and about logic. Children should be encouraged to use as many words associated with addition as possible. Children could be given points (or rewards) for each time they use a new expression, e.g. 'The sum of the numbers in the 3 column is 30 more than the sum of the numbers in the 1 column.'
