ABSTRACT

This chapter examines data collected between 1988 and 1998 and aims to determine the relationships between the assessment information and the youngsters’ cognitive abilities, educational attainments and behaviour. It considers the profiles of pupils using the Wechsler Pre-school and Primary Scale of Intelligence Revised (WPPSI-R UK) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children III UK. The Wechsler Scales enable the assessor to measure cognitive abilities of children from the age of 3 to adulthood. As the tasks in developmental assessments become more complex they align more closely with those found in standardised intelligence tests like the WPPSI. The chapter describes a study of eight pupils aged between 5 years 3 months and 6 years 8 months in an infants school. It presents a study of seven secondary pupils aged between 11 years 3 months and 13 years 9 months in a comprehensive school and provides the case study of Thomas, aged 5 years 6 months.
