ABSTRACT

In 1972, a group of European NGOs established a consortium to respond to the difficulties faced by the people of Southern Sudan after so many years of civil war. Two years later, another NGO grouping came together in the wake of devastating famine in the West African Sahel. The two structures amalgamated in 1976 to form the consortium known today as ACORD 1 through which 20 NGO member agencies from Europe and Canada pool their experience, resources and expertise.
