ABSTRACT

Throughout this book, it has been consistently argued that the development of a more sustainable agriculture requires attention both to resource-conserving technologies and practices, and to local groups and institutions, with external organizations and professionals working in partnerships with local people. When the process of agricultural development focuses on these three components, then sustainable agriculture can bring both environmental and economic benefits for farming households, communities and nations. The elements of the process have been defined in Chapters 4, 5 and 6. This chapter focuses on the existing evidence for impacts in farming communities.
