ABSTRACT

The energy-environmental policies in Odense are mainly focused on district heating systems, efficiency increase in energy networks, and public service management. The district heating system, based on cogeneration, covers the city and 95 per cent of all potential consumers are now connected to the system. Concerning the energy savings goals, the energy monitoring of public buildings ensures an annual saving corresponding to 13 million dkk. Finalization of the ongoing renovation of the DH network and enhanced activities with regard to overall energy savings constitute the two main tasks to be completed in the future. Ensuring people's needs without destroying nature and the environment is the aim of Odense City's energy policy, a policy in accordance with the Brundtland recommendations for sustainable development. The local administration is responsible for local planning activities within all sectors, ie energy, waste disposal, urban planning and transportation. Furthermore, it is responsible for environmental approval of industrial plants, including energy producing units.
