The earth could be described as the ultimate waste recycling unit. Many pollutants are present naturally in the environment and while possessing the potential to cause harm, wil l pass through the environment, life cycles and food chains as valuable nutrients to the benefit of organisms and ecosystems without causing damage or harm to the environment. For example, oxides of nitrogen produced by lightning and washed out as nitrates in rainfall provide a valuable fertilizer nutrient to plants.
