ABSTRACT

This chapter refers to the work of Organization related to strengthening of urban health services and the improvement of the urban environment. An Expert Committee on Urban Health Services attempted to capture the universal dimension and the drama of urbanization that was unfolding in cities of the developing world. The requested State of the Art Report was prepared as a collaborative effort of WHO and UNICEF and presented at a joint meeting in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The Division of Strengthening of Health Services (SHS), initially responsible for initiating this process and promotional activities summarizes above, has specifically concentrated, as part of its wider mandate, on the development of health services in the urban areas of developing countries with emphasis on primary care and the poor. In 1992, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) adopted at the highest political level Agenda-21 an action plan on environment and development to guide national and international action for the years to come.
