ABSTRACT

The cases studies of Chapters 4–13 exemplify a wide range of approaches to SEA, including methods and techniques used in practice. Each of the case studies demonstrates aspects of good practice, but also difficulties and limitations. This chapter focuses on key issues emerging from current SEA practices, the costs and benefits of SEA, and future directions. Although these issues have already been discussed in a theoretical context elsewhere (eg Partidário, 1996), the interesting aspect here is that they are referred to as a result of the application of SEA principles and methodologies in practice. As such, these points can act as a reservoir of experience from which those wishing to learn from practice can draw.
