ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how companies might report on progress towards sustainable development using a stakeholder accountability process. Business has a central role to play in bringing about a more sustainable future therefore. As a starting point, any environmental strategy must demonstrate a real commitment on the part of the whole organization. Sustainable development is not only about direct impact on the environment however and we have already argued that corporate strategy dealing with narrow environmental performance measures is inadequate. The sustainable organization must have strong economic, environmental and social elements to its activities. It must therefore monitor and measure these aspects and ensure that they improve over time. The economic performance of the firm will be sustainable in that it will be sufficient to provide for on-going survival, the continued provision of employment, the payment of dividends to shareholders and the payment of fair wages to all concerned in the organization.
