ABSTRACT

Air pollution has been firmly on the international negotiating agenda for only two decades, although the arbitrations case between Canada and the United States regarding pollution from a smelter in British Columbia (the Trail Smelter Arbitration) is one of the most frequently cited cases in international law. Unlike in earlier sections, then, the treaties date only from the late 1970s. The 14 agreements listed below concern air quality in the EC and between Canada and the United States, long-range transboundary air pollution in Europe, the ozone layer, and climate change.
