Energy Intensity in the Built Environment
This latter change might at first seem trivial in comparison to the first, but the two are linked. Whereas before, a life lived outdoors or in close contact with the outdoors could perhaps allow us to understand natural processes and the ability of and limits to the natural environment’s capacity to deal with human activities, containment indoors has separated us from this understanding. Instead, we have increasingly sought to make buildings our own environment apart from nature. Modern buildings have, almost without fail, artificial heating or cooling systems
and sometimes both. Between different buildings there exist large differences in terms of energy use and environmental impact.
