ABSTRACT

Rachel Carson was a heroine. Singlehandedly, she alerted the public to one of the biggest scandals of this century, the chemical pollution of the world. Her book Silent Spring became a milestone of environmental politics. Starting with pesticides, Carson's main target, pollution control became a synonym for environmental protection. Reacting to the new public demand, the US Environmental Protection Agency was established and the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and more pollution control legislation were adopted at federal and state levels.
