ABSTRACT
International trade and competition are meant to improve the economic well-being of people. At the same time, international competition is being invoked in all countries as an explanation and excuse for undoing social policy and environmental regulation, for shedding labour and for impatience to adopt technologies that put the environment or human health at risk.
