ABSTRACT
When an environmental issue first emerges a typical response is to deal with it in an ad hoc way. Often this means finding a technical solution, which may require a project if the problem is complex or persistent. In due course as other problems arise the realisation dawns that environmental issues penetrate most aspects of a business. At this stage a systematic approach to environmental management is required and typically an environmental manager is appointed.
