However, the extent and nature of these changes have varied across the region, which encompasses marked differences in altitude, climate, soil and resource endowment. These are reflected in major differences in land use and population density. Differences in patterns of resource use also stem from variations in development of infrastructure, and in access to markets, inputs and services. Additional differences reflect the varying needs, customs and livelihood patterns of the peoples living within the region.
