ABSTRACT

Trade and investment liberalization and environmental sustainability are mutually supportive. The link between a high standard of living and improved environmental standards is clearly evident. The Millennium Round should be used as an opportunity to get a consensus on the need for the establishment of a World Organization for the Environment. A more coherent and prioritized approach to environment issues through a single powerful, dynamic and respected international agency is absolutely crucial. A major challenge for the future is to modify the culture of individuals towards the environment. Failure to address environmental issues coherently and effectively leads to greater expectations being placed on the World Trade Organization (WTO) to solve the problem. The link between the progressive liberalization of trade, investment and wealth creation has also been clearly proven by the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and WTO.
