ABSTRACT

Worldwide passenger car production fell 1.9 percent in 1998, to approximately 38 million. 1 (See Figure 1.) Automobile sales declined 2.3 percent, to 37 million, but pushed the world car fleet up 2.1 percent, to 508 million. 2 (See Figure 2.)
