ABSTRACT

Many companies are finding that by reducing their waste at source they not only improve their environmental performance but also save money. The Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme (ETBPP) promotes the uptake of cleaner technologies because of their dual environmental and financial benefit to companies. It encourages companies to consider cleaner technologies when they are investing in new capital equipment. Unfortunately the purchase price of cleaner technology equipment is often higher than the price of more conventional technologies. However, cleaner technologies often generate more profit when the whole life of the equipment is considered. This is because operational savings from such technologies can far outweigh the higher initial investment costs. Dr Martin Gibson works for AEA Technology Environment as manager of the governments Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme (ETBPP). The government Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme (ETBPP) encourages UK businesses to adopt cost-effective measures that reduce waste at source.
