ABSTRACT

A corporation argues that they paid for the work so it should belong to them. Accountants see savings that could result in a significant rise in profits. For some people it is because they feel they did all the work. Actually there are lots of reasons for sharing this kind of technology, not all of them necessarily altruistic, although there are of course the altruistic reasons: preventing hundreds or even hundreds of thousands of people, plants or animals from possible exposure to toxic substances. Putting new life into a dying industry; helping keep things in the earth's crust and out of the biosphere; or just because it makes you feel worthwhile. Nike Inc has been an industry leader in developing new technologies that we have given away to our competitors. In the early 1990s it was becoming evident that governments were becoming more and more regulatory, by 1992 making the environment and worker health and safety a major corporate goal.
